Farm Market Report for Dec. 22, 2015 Keith Helmuth
Meat products of various kinds from local sources have become bestsellers at the Woodstock Farm and Craft Market. Pork, beef, lamb, and chicken, along with a variety of sausages can normally be found in the freezers of several vendors.
Although in times past fish, was also for sale in the Market, it has been missing in the protein line up in recent years. Seafood, of course, is not exactly “local” but, with the Bay of Fundy a few hours down the road, it is definitely regional.
Having seafood in the Market means a vendor has to set up the arrangements for sourcing supplies and have the equipment for handling it. I am happy to announce that Jerry Ingraham (The Coffee Guy) has taken the initiative to bring fish back to the Market.
Jerry, a long time vendor, has been the supplier of Jolly Farmer’s organic chicken for some time and has now added wild caught Digby haddock to his freezer. In addition, he has added a new freezer to his equipment. Previously, he stocked his chicken in one of the upright freezers by the cooler. He has now installed a chest freezer in his own stall space. Look for the stall with of overhead Coffee Guy sign.
He has moved the Jolly Farmer’s chicken products to this new freezer and has begun to add seafood products. The first lot sold quickly. Jerry expects a new order to arrive on Tuesday the 22nd. Jerry is always at his stall on Friday serving up coffee.
This week the vendor’s market day will be on Thursday the 24th. The Market will open at 8 AM and close at its regular time, 4 PM, which will give a full day for picking any last minute items needed for the Christmas holiday and weekend to come.
When I was in the Market last Friday I saw customers at the sales desk with multiple jars of jams and jellies. Folks were picking up maple syrup and baked goods. Some displays of wool mittens, socks and hats looked like they were thinning out a bit, but a good selection still remains. Woodcrafts and jewellery are still in good supply.
